Notes From TEDDY Study Families

For 20 years and counting, PNRI’s TEDDY researchers have formed meaningful bonds with our study participants. These children and their families have dedicated significant time and effort to provide samples, answer questions, and travel to study visits, all in service of the fight against type 1 diabetes (T1D).

“As we approach this final stretch, it’s incredible to think about the journey we’ve all been on. The long hours, the countless visits families have made, and the deep relationships formed –all of it has been leading to this. We’re on the cusp of unlocking insights could have a profound impact on preventing type 1 diabetes, and that’s incredibly exciting.”

Michael Killian
PNRI Director of Clinical Services

When scientists compared TEDDY participants who were diagnosed with T1D versus children diagnosed who were not part of TEDDY, they uncovered something remarkable: TEDDY participants were diagnosed earlier, showed a higher quality of life, and lower parental stress after diagnosis.

As clinical activities in the TEDDY study come to a close in February 2025, further research and analysis of our millions of samples and datasets will continue to not only validate our current findings but look for new triggers and mechanisms to shine light on pathways to improved outcomes and disease prevention in the future. The dedication of these brave families is deeply meaningful to us, and to the generations to come who will live healthier because of this research.

The messages we’ve received from TEDDY families over the years fill us with gratitude to know that participating in our research has had a positive impact.

The TEDDY Study is paving the way for future discovery in diabetes research and will leave an incredible legacy. At PNRI, science that improves lives is our passion, and we are deeply excited about the future possibilities this research holds.
