PNRI Announces Leadership Transition and Welcomes New COO

At PNRI, strong leadership has always played a key role in advancing our mission and supporting the scientists who explore the frontiers of genetic research. This month, we mark an important transition: the retirement of CEO Jack Faris, PhD and the arrival of Mark Rieder, PhD, as our new Chief Operating Officer. We’re deeply grateful for Jack’s outstanding leadership and excited to welcome Mark into this new role.

Jack returned to PNRI as CEO in December 2023 during a pivotal moment for the institute. Initially recruited to serve in an interim role, he stayed on longer than expected—helping guide PNRI through a period of growth, renewed focus, and organizational change.

“Jack brought energy, vision, and stability when PNRI needed it most. His leadership has helped set a strong foundation for our future.”

Gary Kocher
Chair, PNRI Board of Trustees

Over the past 18 months, Jack led with purpose and heart—refining PNRI’s strategic focus, expanding scientific collaborations, and launching new initiatives to ensure the long-term strength and impact of the institute.

Though he’s stepping down from the CEO role, Jack isn’t going far. He will continue to serve on PNRI’s Board of Trustees, remaining a vital part of the institute’s leadership.

“It’s been a privilege to serve as PNRI’s CEO and support the extraordinary work of our scientists and staff. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together and look forward to continuing to champion PNRI’s mission as a member of the Board.”

Jack Faris, PhD
PNRI Chief Executive Officer

As we look ahead, we are pleased to welcome Mark Rieder, PhD, as PNRI’s new Chief Operating Officer.

Mark brings a rare blend of scientific expertise and operational leadership. His background includes more than a decade as research faculty at the University of Washington, six years in operations leadership at Adaptive Biotechnologies, and key roles in scientific management at both UW and the Brotman Baty Institute.

“I’m honored to support PNRI during this exciting time. I look forward to working closely with our team, our partners, and our supporters to carry this mission forward.”

Mark Rieder, PhD
PNRI Chief Operating Officer

As PNRI continues to uncover the genetic foundations of disease and advance discoveries that improve human health, we do so with deep appreciation for the leaders who guide us and the community that supports us.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward together.
